Review

“I think that the questions in the book are very appropriate. They may be on the “more difficult” side when you compare them to the actual exam, but it’s better to be overly prepared than fail the exam. I honestly can’t think of one thing that should be done to improve this book – it’s already great.”Michelle H. Cranney, Program Director, Health Sciences, Virginia College Online, Birmingham, Alabama

I agree with the previous reviewer that the questions in this review guide are fair and do a good job of testing a coder’s broad knowledge base. My only complaint is that there are many errors in the book. (I’m preparing an e-mail to send to the publisher later this month, in fact.) For example, one of the case studies required 9 diagnosis codes, but the answer key only listed 8. The answer key for another case study listed the same diagnosis twice and omitted a correct diagnosis. An E-code for an injury was listed in an answer key for another case, but coders are instructed to only assign E-codes for poisonings and adverse effects. These kinds of small errors are sprinkled throughout the book. Certainly there were places where I just made a mistake, but when I would show the answers to seasoned coders who’ve worked in the field for many years, they would also disagree with the codes listed in the answer key.

Fortunately, I’d still estimate that 90% or more of the book is accurate, and VERY helpful in preparing me for the test. I just took it a week ago, and the CCS is still in the beta period, so I don’t know if I passed or not yet. But I can safely say that I was not surprised by anything on the test, for the most part, and I felt very prepared. Through a combination of the Faye Brown ICD-9 book, consulting Coding Clinics for the last few years, and excellent training both on the job and in school getting my RHIT, I feel like I did well, and hope to have a "Pass!" letter in the mail soon!

Don’t hesitate to buy this book, just don’t beat yourself up if you can’t understand why your answer is wrong in some of the places. It might not be your fault!

This book is really helpful in preparing me for the CCS Examination since it provides an outline of what I need to complete each week. The book contains several quizzes with answers in the back as well a list of domains to review if needed.

This book is very detailed. Lot’s of charting cases. The CD in the back of the book was very helpful for reviewing the guidelines and regulations. Very helpful!

If this book in not required reading for your promotional exam, I would skip it. There is nothing unique or exciting about this particular book other than primarily common sense. In my opinion, the author saw an opportunity to write a book and regurgitate information that is already out there. This book does not fill a void specific to the fire service, nor does it adequately connect with the reader and hold your attention.

The writing style is not polished and lacking more detailed examples of leadership traits other than his close personal connections. If your looking for a quality leadership book, try John C. Maxwell’s "21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership"

This book is a must read for all officers and aspiring officers. It’s different since it goes over all the things to make you a great leader. Highly recommended and if you get the chance, go one of Chief Viscuso’s seminars which was excellent.

Chief viscoso did an excellent Job ! , didn’t found such a good source of personal practical tips! , must read books for fire officers and especially the ones how wants to be true leaders and not just firefighters with ranks – and that’s A LOT DIFFRENT!

Overcoming Trauma and PTSD PDF

Overcoming Trauma and PTSD: A Workbook Integrating Skills from ACT, DBT, and CBT Paperback – December 1, 2012
Author: Visit ‘s Sheela Raja Page ID: 1608822869

Review

“Relying upon the growing body of evidence-based psychological treatments for PTSD, psychologist Sheela Raja assembles a treasure trove of useful exercises and skills for people committed to recovery. This workbook is an invaluable tool to accompany psychotherapy and will prove to be an outstanding complement to existing self-help manuals. Utilizing an integrated framework for promoting behavioral health, Raja’s clinical skill and expertise resounds throughout the text. This is an important reference for patients and clinicians alike.”

—Terence M. Keane, PhD, director of National Center for PTSD in Boston, professor and assistant dean for research at Boston University School of Medicine

“Sheela Raja has produced an excellent resource for the many individuals suffering from emotional consequences of trauma that do not have access to, cannot afford, or prefer not to utilize traditional mental health services. Her book is long overdue in self-help literature. It is grounded in, and supported by, the best available research related to trauma treatment approaches. Readers can rest comfortably knowing that this is the relatively rare book written for trauma survivors that includes techniques proven to be invaluably helpful for countless others suffering from similar difficulties. They can be assured that exercises recommended in this book are bolstered by cutting-edge scientific research. Overcoming Trauma and PTSD is truly an invaluable resource—one that I will use often and recommend highly.”

—Matt J. Gray, PhD, director of clinical training and professor of psychology at the University of Wyoming

“Sheela Raja has written an accessible, clear, and compassionate book that successfully integrates important evidence-based techniques for the treatment of PTSD. She does an excellent job explaining techniques so that people can use them on their own, while also providing important guidance about when (and how) to seek professional help.”

—Holly K. Orcutt, PhD, professor of psychology at Northern Illinois University

This book is very well written and insightful. It seeks to help those who don’t have time or resources for traditional counseling or pyschotherapy but need help overcoming trauma. I found it to be intuitive, thoughtful and easy to understand. I highly recommend this book!

I work with individuals with PTSD and this book is very helpful and it is nice to have pages to copy for my clients, Thank you.

Sheela Raja’s Overcoming Trauma and PTSD provides a good overview and understanding of the PTSD diagnosis for the layperson. It is clearly not intended to replace traditional psychotherapy and treatment, but for those who are struggling and not ready or able to start treatment there are many useful building block skills and techniques that can be learned and practice. Her writing is easy to understand and accessible. Raja pulls from a variety of approaches that have empirical support for helping diverse problems including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and relational problems. Not all users will find that each problem/coping suggestion applies to them and this is best seen as a menu-based approach to healthy coping. As a provider I have also found it useful to use this workbook as an adjunct to treatment, working with clients to practice some the more applicable coping skills in session and then encouraging between practice between sessions. This is made much easier as the client has the workbook to refer back to instead of just their memory of what we talked about in session. Overall, I recommend this workbook and think it can be helpful for clients and clinicians alike in working to reclaim a fulfilling life after trauma.
