“I think that the questions in the book are very appropriate. They may be on the “more difficult” side when you compare them to the actual exam, but it’s better to be overly prepared than fail the exam. I honestly can’t think of one thing that should be done to improve this book – it’s already great.”Michelle H. Cranney, Program Director, Health Sciences, Virginia College Online, Birmingham, Alabama

I agree with the previous reviewer that the questions in this review guide are fair and do a good job of testing a coder’s broad knowledge base. My only complaint is that there are many errors in the book. (I’m preparing an e-mail to send to the publisher later this month, in fact.) For example, one of the case studies required 9 diagnosis codes, but the answer key only listed 8. The answer key for another case study listed the same diagnosis twice and omitted a correct diagnosis. An E-code for an injury was listed in an answer key for another case, but coders are instructed to only assign E-codes for poisonings and adverse effects. These kinds of small errors are sprinkled throughout the book. Certainly there were places where I just made a mistake, but when I would show the answers to seasoned coders who’ve worked in the field for many years, they would also disagree with the codes listed in the answer key.
Fortunately, I’d still estimate that 90% or more of the book is accurate, and VERY helpful in preparing me for the test. I just took it a week ago, and the CCS is still in the beta period, so I don’t know if I passed or not yet. But I can safely say that I was not surprised by anything on the test, for the most part, and I felt very prepared. Through a combination of the Faye Brown ICD-9 book, consulting Coding Clinics for the last few years, and excellent training both on the job and in school getting my RHIT, I feel like I did well, and hope to have a "Pass!" letter in the mail soon!
Don’t hesitate to buy this book, just don’t beat yourself up if you can’t understand why your answer is wrong in some of the places. It might not be your fault!
This book is really helpful in preparing me for the CCS Examination since it provides an outline of what I need to complete each week. The book contains several quizzes with answers in the back as well a list of domains to review if needed.
This book is very detailed. Lot’s of charting cases. The CD in the back of the book was very helpful for reviewing the guidelines and regulations. Very helpful!
